I used to be just like you.

I remember sitting in corporate roundtable meetings, daydreaming about the day I would finally open my own store. For years, I drew sketches of logos, interior designs and making plans in the back of my notebook. I took a classes at FIT at night to learn as much as I could. One was called "Opening Your Own Boutique", taught by a woman named Princess, who had a well established store on 125th Street in Harlem. Over the course of 4 two hour classes, she continuously said the phrase,"You've just got to do it!" Princess was priceless.

The day I was called down to HR and told that my job was being eliminated, I felt relieved. I stared across the table at my boss and the HR guy and said "Give me a few months, then start to look for The Fashion Truck out on the road." I don't know where from within me that came from, or how I had the guts to just say it. But I said it- and I did it. Within 6 months of that day, I was rolling out of my driveway in The Fashion Truck.

My favorite online resources!

I love going to trade shows! I usually attend FAME in New York City to shop some of my favorite, affordable, low minimum vendors. Knowing that much of that inventory will ship when it ships (you never really know...!), I always have some other options in my back pocket. Making sure I'm on top of the trends and can add inventory quickly when I need it is also super important.

That's why I rely on some amazing online resources to provide me with a huge array of choices in merchandise. Many of these sites are compilations of many vendors in the US so you are sure to get tons of options that match what you need. See my favorite sites below.

I love ordering in-between show inventory from these websites. I can discover new vendors, try out a new style or two and find out what's trending in boutiques across the country!

Fashion Go: A HUGE array of merchandise- from clothing to accessories to shoes. Check out the 'Best of the Best' tab at the top for what the bestsellers on the site are. A great way to see trending items!

Golden Stella: LOVE this website's jewelry and scarves. They are based in Atlanta so if you are on the East Coast, you can typically get inventory in less than 5 days!

LA Showroom: Similar to Fashion Go, this Los Angeles based website features vendors that sell everything from shoes to plus sizes. Recently redesigned, a wonderful resource for well made items.

Have the Best Week of the Winter!


Are you ready to have the BEST SALES WEEK of the Winter?

Valentine's Day week is always a GREAT opportunity to SELL through your inventory and make some money!

Here are some of my favorite tips for maximizing this week:

1. KEEP IT TIGHT: Do not buy more inventory! Work with what you have in stock and create sets or groups to make it look new and interesting.

2. GAL PALS: Run a special for 'Gal-entine's Day'! Made popular by the TV showParks and Rec, Galentine's Day is a fun way to market to your female customers. Design some BFF-sets, like friendship sets for adults so you can sell 2 of the same item!

3. DISCOUNTS: Offer a sliding scale discount for the day before and day of Valentine's Day- the more customers purchase, the bigger discount they get!

4. PROMOTE YO'SELF: Have you promoted your business this week? Do it! NOW! Post on ALL your social media two times a day to promote your merchandise, your open hours and any specials you are running! Send an email to your list 2 times this week to relay the
same details. If you don't tell your followers you are ready for them to shop this week, they'll never know!

If you can't tell- I'm VERY passionate about using this week as a way to boost traditionally slow winter sales. Suddenly customers wake up and realize it's time to take out the credit card again. And it's been long enough since Christmas that they are ready! Get yourself ready to make some money!!

It's January... Now what?

Hello Retailers (or Future Retailers)!

Happy 2016! I hope you had an amazing holiday selling season and can look back with a smile!

Now that it's January and the holiday sparkle has worn off, what are you up to? Maybe you are a little stumped, so I thought I'd give you some ideas! 

I know that I have a mixed group of business owners, and potential mobile retail business owners that get this email so I've decided to break this email down into ideas for each to you to help you get through this winter and come out stronger on the other side!

Do you own a mobile retail business?
Great! You probably had an amazing holiday season, selling gifts, winterwear and fun party dresses like hotcakes. Now its January and the feeling is different. Sales have slowed down, maybe the weather has gotten colder and it's tough to book events. I hear you! Every January is almost like a low point for retailers...everyone else is making their New Years Resolutions and you are on a low from the 'Holiday High'.

But don't get too down on me here! Just think, Valentines Day is around the corner. An amazing opportunity to market new product and gifts to your customers and their loved ones. Are there Valentines Ladies Night events you can set up a table at? Or perhaps a Gal-entine's Day home party with a repeat customer? This is the time to reach out to your email list and let them know that just because it's winter, doesn't mean you are going anywhere...

OR, maybe you are? I remember after my first year of mobile retailing I was ready for a break. I had worked my butt off and after Christmas, just crashed- hard. I took my hard earned savings and bought myself a two week trip to Florida to escape the chilly Northeast weather and just focus on relaxing. If that's workable for you- do it. You need the refresher after a hard worked year on the road. You'll come back to working with a renewed sense of self and preparing to get your yearly goals written and in motion! Don't feel at all bad about giving yourself a well deserved break!

Perhaps you're on the other side of the coin... and the person who is thinking and preparing to join the mobile retail world.

AWESOME. Good for you! January for you should be all about plotting your plan for the year. Starting a mobile retail business in March, April or May is ideal so if you don't have a vehicle yet, you should be on the hunt for one! January and February should truly be your business start up prep months where you are attending apparel shows, building out your truck and booking events. Not to mention building a website and getting your social media buzzing for your impending opening. The winter months are really a time to put your head down and work work work!
